Game Fishing Oman

> ACCESS
> Nothing beats Virgin Atlantic’s new Upper Class service to Dubai via London (virgin-atlantic.com). The fare buys a private mini-suite equipped with a 6.6-foot-long flat bed, a desk and laptop outlet, a ten-inch TV with access to new-release films, and an order-anytime gourmet menu. Some itineraries have a London layover, which breaks up the two-day trip nicely, and Upper Class includes limo transfer to Heathrow from your hotel, drive-through check-in at the new Upper Class Wing, a queue-free dash through Virgin's Private Security Channel, and access to the just-opened Upper Class Clubhouse. Fares from New York start at $6,700; from $8,700 departing LAX.

> Oman Air (omanair.com) offers five daily connections for the hour-long flight from Dubai to Muscat from $175.

> LODGING
Few luxury hotels have more dramatic settings than Shangri-La’s new Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa (shangrila.com). Framed by limestone cliffs, the 124-acre, three-hotel resort looks like a modern Arabian village, with views over the palm-lined half-moon beach and Al Jissah Bay. One-bedroom suites have generous sitting rooms, handsome Omani design details such as solid wooden doors, complimentary Internet access, and beautiful balconies overlooking the resort (order in breakfast). In high season, suites from $830.

> For London layovers, try the Cadogan Hotel (cadogan.com), in posh Knightsbridge, a favorite of Oscar Wilde. Superior singles from $500.

> ATTRACTIONS
> To see the breadth of Oman’s offerings, you need a tried-and- true touring company. Gulf Leisure Tours (gulfleisure.com) will show you the city, mountains, desert, and sea in style. There are camel safaris, dune bashing (4x4ing in the desert), souk hopping, canyoneering, scuba diving, and big-game fishing. The intrepid can even go caving in Majlis Al Jinn, the second-largest underground chamber on earth. Tours from $380 for groups of two, plus $65 per additional person. Fishing from $442 for a half day to $800 for a full day, with up to four fishermen. > For snorkeling and diving, the Oman Dive Center (omandivecenter.com) offers five dive boats for trips to nearby protected coves, to Fahal Island for brilliant corals, and on to the pristine Dimaniyat Islands for abundant fish and shark species. Dives from $36 per tank.
