The Player’s Club

Custom-fit golfing and gear at Reynolds Plantation--and beyond

After slumping PGA Pro Kenny Perry underwent a high-tech swing analysis at the TaylorMade Performance Laboratory in 2005, his game improved so dramatically that he won the Merrill Lynch Shootout (along with its six-figure purse) the next week. Now TaylorMade can polish your game too—though it can’t promise the cash.

TaylorMade has become the wood of choice on the PGA Tour, largely because of its cutting-edge swing-analysis system, which employs computer-monitored sensors to design custom clubs. Though the tool was developed to fit sponsored pros, it proved so effective that the company began marketing to the public last season. Now you can get golf’s version of the bespoke suit at one of seven Performance Labs, located in fine golf resorts.

The best is at the Reynolds Plantation’s Ritz-Carlton, a Georgia lakeside lodge an hour east of Atlanta with a full-service spa, a host of restaurants, and five award- winning courses. Reynolds recently hired one of the nation’s top 100 instructors, Charlie King, to direct the new golf academy, which works closely with the lab. Once you’ve been sized up for your set, there’s only one dilemma: Tear up Reynolds’s courses with your custom clubs, or rush home to your local greens for a new personal best? TAYLORMADE R7 SERIES BURNER WOODS
Weighted screws allow you to change the balance of the clubs to correct or enhance draws and fades. After the fitting session, the Performance Lab figures out which of these paradigm- changing “moveable weight technology” drivers and woods are right for you. $189–$889; taylormadegolf.com

ADIDAS TOUR 360 SHOES
With a self-customizing foam lining, these cleats make walking 36 holes feel like a spin around the clubhouse. You get running-shoe comfort and performance in a modern interpretation of classic greens aesthetics. $180; adidasgolf.com

TAG HEUER PROFESSIONAL GOLF WATCH
Unlike most fine mechanical watches, which shouldn’t be worn on the course, Tag Heuer made this model to withstand golfing’s violent swinging motion and impacts. The low-profile buckle won’t muss your swing, either. $1,395; tagheuer.com

BUSHNELL PINSEEKER 1500 TOURNAMENT EDITION

Thanks to a recent rule change by the USGA, laser rangefinders are now legal for tournament play, taking the guess-work out of distance estimation and club selec- tion. The PinSeeker is stable, fast, and accurate— even if you’re not. $399; bushnell.com

SILHOUETTE IDEAL GOLF SUNGLASSES
The pioneers of high-end rimless sunglasses are eyeing golf with these ultralight titanium shades, featuring crystal-clear optics. The nonpolarized Ideal Golf lenses make it easier to follow your shots off the tee and read putts on the green. $275–$365; silhouette.com
