In 1997, at age 18, Hamza Yildiz became the youngest rug salesman in the history of Istanbul’s Sultanahmet quarter, the hub of the region that has been producing the finest carpets in the world for more than a millennium. Four years later, while managing Noah’s Ark Carpets and Kilim Collection in Istanbul, he met his future wife, Yuki, a graduate student in archaeology at Yale. Together they’ve created Seeing Is Dreaming, a gallery that sells Turkey’s finest modern carpets, accompanied by Ivy League insights on tribal art.

Most of the rugs Yildiz offers are woven—traditionally for dowries—by rural village women, and they express a beautifully idiosyncratic range of color and emotion. “Each woman weaves her dreams and feelings into the carpets,” says Yildiz, adding, “I believe our Hereke rugs are the finest modern carpets anywhere.” Spread a silk-on-silk Turkish Hereke ($5,000 per square meter) by the hearth, coax your woman to cuddle by the fire, and discover the difference 480 individual knots in each square centimeter of carpet can make. seeingisdreaming.com

Three More Goods to Go

1. The Black Sea’s osetra, sevruga, and beluga caviars sell for a third less than their Caspian counterparts. Try them at Istanbul’s spice bazaar, at caviar stall No. 15 in the historic, and aromatic, Eminönü district. 011-90-212-512-8400

2. A perfect cup of Ottoman joe begins with a Turkish-style coffeepot, called an ibrik. Add sugar and coffee (powdery-fine grind) to water, boil for 15 seconds, then remove from heat and let settle. Find an ibrik at the 500-year-old Grand Bazaar. grandbazaarturkey.com

3. Lokum—better known as Turkish delight—has been enjoyed by Ottoman royalty for five centuries. Buy a bellyful of the best at Ali Muhiddin’s confection shop, in Eminönü. Some 250 years after the shop’s founding, the family recipe hasn’t changed. 011-90-212-522-0666
