OFTEN REFERRED TO AS the Architect of Anatomy, Mark Harigian offers what you can’t find in the fitness department at Sears. The Los Angeles–based home-gym designer makes use of his education in mechanical drawing and engineering to design and build some of the finest home-workout rooms. “What I do is similar to what a custom motorcycle-builder does,” says Harigian, who began his career as a personal trainer in 1985. “I bend the steel.”

Frustrated by the minuscule and ill-equipped workout rooms in his upscale clients’ homes, Harigian decided to set up his own metal shop and build custom equipment for those he trains—a service he has since extended to celebrities, elite athletes, and anyone else who can afford his five- and six-figure price tags. Harigian travels all over the world and has designed custom facilities for everyone from Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Hanks to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the world’s fourth-richest man. Whether he and his team are constructing extra-tall dumbbell racks for Shaquille O’Neal or embroidering a client’s family crest onto the seat cushion of an exercise bike, Harigian specializes in making the home gym as inviting as it is effective.

When planning a gym, Harigian recommends allotting at least 800 square feet. And he tailors the interior to the locale. “If their second home is at a ski resort or beach area, I choose equipment that will help them with the activities a client will be doing at that location,” he says. The result is that the “workout room” often becomes its own spa destination resort, complete with mineral soaking tubs and a sauna.
