It’s a mistake to bypass Philadelphia for cities with greater renown. In addition to its historical significance, the United States’ original capital (under the First Continental Congress) is home to fanatical outdoor enthusiasts and a thriving art scene. Wander Old City on the first Friday of the month and you’ll discover a neighborhood with narrow streets packed with artists, collectors, and aficionados scoping the latest shows and gallery openings. Across town, bikers and joggers usurp West River Drive, a major byway, every weekend to complete the nine-mile loop beginning and ending at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

No one embraces Philly’s passions more than Joe Varalli, owner of restaurant Upstares & Sotto Varalli, one of the city’s staples, across from the Academy of Music. The interior is packed with original art and fixtures ranging from the unique window latches to the 34-panel, LED-lit mosaic that runs the length of the building. Varalli’s attention to detail is almost overwhelming. “There are so many hidden treasures,” he says. The 48-year-old restaurateur admits he can’t give such concentration to everything. “Right now it’s sailing,” he says. Varalli is currently dedicated to races on the Delaware River. His focus yields results. A few years back, Varalli and his crew entered the Heineken Regatta, in St. Maarten, and were the only team without sponsorship to finish in the top four. The judges were thoroughly confused. Like Varalli, Philadelphia can be underestimated at first glance. To this Varalli says, “In some areas we rival or surpass other towns.”
