114Ski 100 runs in one day.

Carving a Niche

Andrew Cader, the former CEO of Spear, Leeds & Kellogg, wanted to do something “cool and unusual” for his 50th birthday. After a year of après-ski conversations, he settled on a quest to find out how many ski runs he could make in 24 hours.

Cader had already skied the Tordrillo Mountains, in south- central Alaska, and he knew the summer solstice could enable night runs during the midnight twilight. So last June, aided by rotating Chugach guides and helicopter pilots, he celebrated one milestone by making another: 101 runs and 161,000 vertical feet in one day. The mission featured a gantlet of snow conditions and even a brush with doom. A wrong turn brought Cader one ski length away from a 40-foot free fall. Nirvana came on the final run when family members skied with him. “Very unforgettable to have them out there,” he says. “What else can you ask for on a birthday?”
