218Trek the Annapurna Circuit

There's a reason Nepal's tourism web site lists more than 600 trekking outfitters: the Himalayas. The world's tallest mountain range includes 110 peaks above 24,000 feet, and the classic way to view them is to hike the nearly 200-mile-long Annapurna Circuit. The trek takes about three weeks. Aside from needing a few days to acclimatize—the trail goes over 17,000-foot passes—most able-bodied veteran hikers can handle it. $2,290; worldexpeditions.com

life_list_reef.jpg219Dive the Great Barrier Reef

Stretching along the northeast coast of Australia for 1,250 miles, the Great Barrier Reef is the planet's largest living organism. The World Heritage site is home to more than 10,000 marine species, with the coral itself the star attraction. Dive operators abound, but the luxe Hayman Island Resort—which has its own diving team—is the ultimate jumping-off point. Prime time for diving is August. From $410; hayman.com.au

life_list_glide.jpg220Glide Across New Zealand

Who hasn't at one time or another dreamed He had the  gift of flight? Gliders—which, at around 800 pounds, feel as nimble and delicate as sparrows—are about as close as it gets. Of course, part of the appeal of flying is the view, and New Zealand, with its mild climate and spectacular landscape, delivers. Southern Soaring, one of two operators in Omarama, on the South Island, specializes in flights for beginners. $165 for a half-hour; soaring.co.nz

life_list_wine.jpg221Shell Out Two Grand for a Bottle of Haut-Brion

Why would anyone spend $2,000 for a single bottle of wine? Uncork a classic vintage of Haut-Brion (we suggest the '89) and you'll understand. Since 1525, Château Haut-Brion has been associated with the best from Bordeaux. The region's pioneering winemaking estate credits optimum rootstocks and a tradition of innovation (it was the first  to use steel fermentation vats, in the 1960s). Production of the white is limited to less than 15,000 cases annually. haut-brion.com

life_list_fish.jpg222Fish at the End of the Earth

Argentinians call it El Fin del mundo—"the end of the world." Anglers come to Tierra del Fuego, on the tip of South America, to cast for sea-run browns that can grow to 40 pounds. Along its private stretch of the Rio Grande, the Kau-Tapen lodge provides the kind of rustic elegance appropriate for the surroundings. A day fishing here can bring 20 trout per rod, depending on the time of year. (Peak season is November through April.) Afterwards, retreat  to the lodge's sauna and then indulge in some of the excellent local wines and cuisine. From $7,895 per week; kautapen.com
