JOHN MUIR TRAIL
Yosemite Valley, California
Re-create Ansel Adams’s classic journey through the Sierra on this 211-mile hike, stretching from Yosemite to Mount Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48.

LAKESHORE TRAIL
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

For a low-traffic overnighter, hike five miles on the Twentymile Trail and camp along Eagle Creek. Pack a fly rod: The park recently opened up brook fishing.

WONDERLAND TRAIL
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Thanks to massive reconstruction, the park is mostly operational after a 2006 flood. Starting in July, put boots to ground on the 93-mile Wonderland Trail, with views of Rainier.

CRAWFORD PATH
White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire

Grind up 6,288-foot Mount Washington for the annual alpine blooms, in June. Then grab a room at the Lakes of the Clouds hut (outdoors.org).
